If, like me, you've gone through life only knowing the 'Granny Knot' then you are in for a treat!
In this brand new workshop you will learn from the experts a variety of knots and the practical application they can be put to, such as rope mats and key rings made from the Turks Head weave. This is a very versatile knot that can be used to make bindings and grips on objects. You will also learn the Constrictor Knot, which is useful for creating a tight binding around something
In the first part of the session you will make a Turks Head thump mat (see photo top left) which has a relatively simple woven pattern. After this you can choose whether to repeat the pattern or move on to a more complex type of Turks Head
In the second part of the session you will be shown how to make the Monkey's Fist - this is a ball-shaped knot comprised of three interlocking circles of rope. You can make several items using this knot such as a rope doll, a key ring or a light pull etc. Once you have completed this you can either repeat the same thing or try a larger version. Several of the projects made with the Monkey's Fist also incorporate the eye splice, a technique used for forming a secure loop in stranded rope by tucking the strands back through the rope
The workshop is geared up to allow flexibility for each participant to pursue what intersts them the most, while still providing a structured framework to work in. All in all, a fascinating insight into the world of high grade ropes, twines and cord made from natural plant fibres such as hemp, cotton, manila and flax
All materials and tools will be provided on the day and you will receive one-to-one tuition for a large part of the session
