Great Britain circa 1944, and the rapidly ageing recruits of the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard Platoon are tasked with patrolling the Dover Army Base to watch out for attacks. Before long, they are on an ill-fated mission to locate a missing bull, which typically ends in disaster.
When a glamourous journalist arrives to cover the troops’ antics, their attempts at good behaviour fall flat on each occasion, and it looks as if they will be made to look a mockery by the intrusive British media.
The discovery of a radio signal transmitted from Walmington-on-Sea to Berlin suggests a German spy may be amidst their town, and their second chance to shine arrives.
Dad’s Army is the latest big-screen adaptation of the much-loved BBC comedy series, which ran between 1968 and 1977. The film is directed by Oliver Parker, whose résumé includes Johnny English Reborn (2011), The Importance of Being Earnest (2002) and The Ideal Husband (1999).
Some of Britain’s finest acting talent are all present and correct, in the shape of Bill Nighy (Pride, Love Actually), Catherine Zeta Jones (Chicago, The Terminal) and Michael Gambon (Paddington, The Kings Speech).
