The world’s eyes turned to the San José Mine in Capiapó, Chile, in August 2010. After years of warnings about the mine’s dwindling safety, 33 men travelled deep into the heart of the mine on August 5th when disaster struck.
The heart of the mine collapsed, leaving all 33 men trapped, with little hope of escaping. There was only enough food to last them for a few days at most, but they managed to ration it out for two weeks. Supplies were running low, and the ventilation was unbearably poor; morale fell lower than ever.
It was at this moment that a drill bit made its way into the shelter, and when it emerged on the surface of the mine, there was a note attached: “We are well in the shelter, the 33”.
The world now knew that the men had survived against the most impossible odds, and a rescue mission began. Food and water was sent down to them, and international pressure was mounting to see them returned safely to their families.
The mine was so structurally delicate, the rescue mission was expected to take months, and the miners began to lose hope of ever reaching the top. Faced with such a drastic situation, it would take nothing short of a miracle to rescue all 33 men before it was too late.
This incredible film tells the dramatic true story of the 2010 Capiapó mining disaster, which drew attention from every corner of the globe.
Starring Antonio Banderas (The Expendables 3), Juliette Binoche (Clouds of Sils Maria), and Rodrigo Santoro (300: Rise of an Empire), The 33 is a powerful and emotional story of survival and hope against all the odds.
