Having watched their peaceful protests fall onto deaf ears, the founding members of the British women’s suffrage movement decided to take the law into their own hands at the turn of the 20th century.

Consisting largely of working-class women, the group became radicalized, even using violence to fight their cause. Suffragette focuses its attention on Maud, a strong and spirited character who, just like her comrades, was willing to risk her life, loved ones and possessions in order to correct the state’s many wrongs.

Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane) directs this tense and gripping drama which perfectly encapsulates a notable period in British history.

Maud is portrayed by Carey Mulligan, a rising starlet whose career has been on a steady upward curve for some time, with films such as Drive (2011), Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) and the recent Far from the Madding Crowd (2015) under her belt.

A-List support comes in the shape of living legend Meryl Streep (Into the Woods, Ricki and the Flash), Helena Bonham Carter (Cinderella, The King’s Speech) and Ben Whishaw (Paddington, Spectre).
