Denial (12a)

  • 2017-03-09 19:30:00

Based on true events, Deborah Lipstadt is sued for libel and must prove that the Holocaust actually happened, after she challenges famed denier David Irving.

Freedom of speech is a right we are fortunate to have. But what do you do when someone exercises it to try and dismiss one of the deadliest genocides in history?

Deborah Lipstadt (Rachel Weisz) is a historian who knows the Holocaust happened and isn’t afraid to talk about it. She lectures, teaches and writes about the mass tragedy in the hopes of educating the modern world and renewing the memory of the millions who were slaughtered under the rule of Nazi Europe.

David Irving (Timothy Spall) is in denial.

Also a renowned historian, he takes a different approach to the past and is known for his fierce belief that the Holocaust didn’t occur.

So when Lipstadt identifies Irving as a Holocaust denier, he sues her for libel. And, as English libel law places the burden of proof upon the defendant, she must prove the obvious that the Holocaust existed, and therefore Irving is a liar.

Based on the 1996 trial of David Irving v Penguin Books and Deborah Lipstadt, Denial is directed by Mick Jackson (The Bodyguard).Weisz (The Light Between Oceans) and Spall (Sweeney Todd) star as the warring historians, with support from Tom Wilkinson (Michael Clayton) and Andrew Scott (Spectre) as the lawyers on the high-profile case.
