For nearly 700 years, the splended 13th Century Gothic Abbey at Whitby has towered over the town. Today, you can take in the wonderful views of the coastline and town as you explore the abbey's extensive reamins.
First founded in 657 AD by Abbess Hildm it was refounde ater the Norman Conquest and remained a centre of religious life until it was suppressed in 1538. Centuries of wear, weather and war have left their makr and you'll find many layers of history to explore and unravel.
Whitby is looking for volunteers to help the public enjoy, learn and step into over 1,000 years of history through a series of guided tours. We are looking for creative stroytellers to help us share our message who can give their time to us in a rewarding, engaging and different activity.
If you are interested in Volunteering for Whitby Abbey, we are holding an open day on 14th April from 11am - 12:30pm.
This is a chance to meet the team, see the site and ask any questions you may have.
